Mt Skåla is a hard hike! Starting at almost sea level you have over 1800m of just about constant ascent to get to the top. But the reward is spectacular! Planning how to photograph this mountain started even before I got to Norway. I knew I wanted to photograph it from the fjord, so as soon as I got to the location I started looking for spots. Couldn't find any that I liked, so I went waterfall hiking and photographing with Stetind in the background. My good friend who was with me was helping search for spots, found this spot! I hiked up from the other side of the range pushing through kms of snow to get this vantage point only to arrive and be clouded out. I decided to wait at the top for the cloud to clear, which was worth the wait despite the cold. I opened the shutter for 20secs and a huge lightning bolt came thundering down into the ocean not far from the beach. I was using a wide angle lens, so the bolt was actually closer than it looks in this picture. The next bolt was on the other side of my car as the rain came, so that was it! I took this photo while these fires were raging, with smoke darkening the sky and the sea to the south of Perth. Nature does as it does, and its order is often not ours. As we are affected, as our beloved land is scarred, we will rebuild and help those than need help. We lost more trees over that summer/autumn than in living memory. Some trees gave up after too much dry for too many months. This tree was on the edge of an old bauxite strip mine. The smaller trees at the bottom of the image are replanted trees. It pushes up and over the peaks falling down their faces to the north. April 2024 Dwellingup, Western Australia On a foggy morning in 2024 some parts of Western Australia had been in a long and terrible drought. We lost more trees over that summer/autumn than in living memory. Some trees gave up after too much dry for too many months. This tree was on the edge of an old bauxite strip mine. The smaller trees at the bottom of the image are replanted trees. It is certainly the most beautiful I've ever seen! Made by cold glacial melt water carving through white rocks surrounded by dramatic peaks and canyons. The Kozjak stream is one the many tributaries to the Soca and it is also stunningly beautiful in a much smaller scale. Deep forest greens walled into an ever deepening canyon of moss covered white rocks and all carved up with icy blue to emerald green rapids. With all this beauty and it hard to believe just a few 100 meters from here are WW1 tunnels with machine gun boxes and muddy trenches deep in the forest. These forests are scattered with the metal remains from WW1. In three years of fighting 300,000 men lost their lives over the area of Kobarid. The wind was so strong that I struggled to stand, let alone set-up my tripod. The rain was horizontal and torrential, with rivers swelling. I knew if I got into the river I'd be more protected from the fierce winds. So I waded up the river edge till I got to a bend (as you can see the water is flowing across me).
